Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said Brugeaud would lead the taskforce, commencing on July 1. “Mr Brugeaud is uniquely qualified to work hand in hand with businesses to design and implement a cross-border trade system that meets their needs,” he said. Brugeaud has held the role of DTA CEO since 2018 after moving over from the Australian Bureau of Statistics where he was the deputy Australian statistician....

For example, the report warns that many organisations struggle with detecting the suspicious activity associated with ransomware and attacks that could provide early evidence that cyber criminals have compromised the network. That includes failing to identify unusual lateral movement across corporate networks, or being able to spot unauthorised users gaining access to corporate data. The cyber criminals behind ransomware attacks are accessing this data to not just encrypt it, but also steal it, using the threat of publishing stolen information as extra leverage to pressure ransomware victims into paying the ransom for the decryption key....

More than 300 North American IT and cybersecurity decision-makers were polled. Most, 62%, said they plan to increase spending on ransomware protection, as 43% admitted to at least one Ransomware attack within the past two years. The top attack vectors were all from outside the organization, with 37% citing remote worker exploits as a key issue. An additional 35% said cloud infrastructure was to blame, and 32% reported security problems with cloud-based apps....

The opening paragraphs said: Tapscott noted that the crisis revealed all the weaknesses of our underlying social contract as we transition fully to the digital age and unleash a new set of forces for profound change. He identified five weaknesses that were the most damaging from 2020 to 2030: Systemic inequality and racial injustice....

In the early months of the pandemic, Microsoft was talking about two years of digital transformation in just two months, as many people switched to remote working and companies scrambled to rethink business models for a profoundly changed world. Two years later and digital transformation has continued apace. That’s forced change on organisations that might otherwise have seen no reason to alter their working practices for years to come. The most obvious example of the change is the switch to remote working which has now – for many knowledge workers at least – become at least a part of their everyday working life....

The new rules were handed down earlier this month by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and will be managed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The regulations were prompted in part by an April attack on New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority – one of the largest transportation systems in the world – and a 2020 attack on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. But in a letter to David Pekoske, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, five senior US Senators criticized the new rules and how they were rolled out....

The new technique – jointly developed by researchers from Australia’s University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales (UNSW) and RMIT, and Germany’s Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering – involves precisely embedding single atoms one-by-one in silicon wafers. According to the researchers, the technique, which has been published in an Advanced Materials paper, takes advantage of the precision of the atomic microscope, which has a sharp cantilever that “touches” the surface of a chip with a positioning accuracy of just half a nanometre, which is about the same space between atoms in a silicon crystal....

Salesforce is spinning its mega acquisition of Tableau Software as the number-one CRM vendor buying the number-one business intelligence (BI) and analytics vendor. It’s a big deal that was likely hastened by last week’s acquisition of Looker by Google. In the short term, it will give Salesforce more revenue, but in my view, the success and ultimate value of the proposed $15.7 billion deal will depend on what Salesforce and Tableau can do together and whether Tableau can accelerate its move into the cloud....

The company reported second quarter earnings of 56 cents a share on revenue of $6.34 billion, up 23% from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings were $1.48 a share. For Salesforce, the quarter marked the first one topping $6 billion in revenue. Wall Street was expecting Salesforce to report fiscal second quarter revenue of $6.24 billion with non-GAAP earnings of 92 cents a share. By product line, Salesforce’s “other” category that includes MuleSoft and Tableau was its biggest revenue line....
