Where once supercomputers were only for scientific problems, the development of AI programs known as large language models, or LLMs, is prompting businesses to seek out the same horsepower the world’s top research laboratories have. For example, Nvidia, the standard bearer in chips for AI, in September announced a cloud computing facility dedicated to large language models that will be rentable as a service by enterprises. Monday, Cerebras Systems, the 6-year-old, Sunnyvale, Calif....

“We believe that large language models are under-hyped, not over-hyped,” said Cerebras co-founder and CEO Andrew Feldman in a press briefing. “We are just beginning to see the impact of them; there will be winners and new emergents in each of three layers in the ecosystem, in the hardware layer, the infrastructure layer, and the application layer.” Feldman predicted, “Next year you will see a sweeping rise in the impact of large language models in various parts of the economy....

Akamai announced on Tuesday that it is acquiring infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform provider Linode for about $900 million. Leighton said Linode is a very developer-friendly IaaS provider that makes it very easy to spin up a virtual machine or a container to build and run applications. “By combining that with Akamai, we’re the world’s leaders in content delivery and web security. AMD and Microsoft recently confirmed Windows 11 and PCs with some AMD processors were seeing performance problems, in particular when using games or other demanding workloads. As ZDNet reported last week, Microsoft rolled out a fix for the Windows 11 and AMD performance issues to Windows Insiders on the Beta and Release Preview channels with the Windows 11 build 22000.282. The past several months have been a tumultuous time for the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) plans to let commercial entities operate 5G services on the C-band spectrum in the US. Barracuda analysts examined more than 12 million spear phishing and social engineering attacks impacting more than 3 million mailboxes at over 17,000 organizations between May 2020 and June 2021. The “Spear Phishing: Top Threats and Trends Vol. 6 – Insights” report found that 43% of phishing attacks impersonate Microsoft and the average organization is targeted by over 700 social engineering attacks each year. Nearly 80% of BEC attacks target employees outside of financial and executive roles, with the average CEO receiving 57 targeted phishing attacks each year and IT staffers getting an average of 40 targeted phishing attacks annually....
