The Australian insurance group said its IT systems were taken offline for planned “maintenance” works that involved IT security advisors from Microsoft. The rollout had taken place at Medibank’s headquarters in Melbourne. “Given the complexity of the maintenance activities and the requirement to take our systems offline, this operation has been in the planning stages for several weeks,” the company said in a statement. All customer-facing platforms were tested and IT systems brought back online ahead of schedule on Saturday, operating with enhanced security features, it added....

The US nonprofit, which is known for testing consumer products, asked what steps can be taken to help usher in “memory safe” languages, like Rust, over options such as C and C++. Consumer Reports said it wanted to address “industry-wide threats that cannot be solved through user behavior or even consumer choice” and it identified “memory unsafety” as one such issue. The report, Future of Memory Safety, looks at range of issues, including challenges in building memory safe language adoption within universities, levels of distrust for memory safe languages, introducing memory safe languages to code bases written in other languages, and also incentives and public accountability....

The new advanced feature is generally available in Microsoft Authenticator and should help counter attacks on MFA that rely on push notification spam. Researchers earlier this year spotted so-called ‘MFA fatigue attacks’ on Office 365 users, where attackers repeatedly trigger MFA push notifications while trying to log in to a victim’s account with an already compromised password. The attacker hopes at some point the victim is worn down or distracted enough by the notifications to accidentally approve the login attempt....

On Wednesday, Guardicore Labs’ AVP of Security Research Amit Serper published the results of an analysis of Autodiscover, a protocol used to authenticate to Microsoft Exchange servers and to configure client access. There are different iterations of the protocol available for use. Guardicore explored an implementation of Autodiscover based on POX XML and found a “design flaw” that can be exploited to ’leak’ web requests to Autodiscover domains outside of a user’s domain, as long as they were in the same top-level domain (TLD)....

Autopatch has reached general availability after a brief public preview last month following its unveiling in April. The Microsoft-managed service promises to automate the process of orchestrating patches for admins who have tens of thousands of PCs under their remit. Those admins need to apply as many as 100 patches each month, including zero-days, but sometimes the updates break core Windows services, such as virtual private networks (VPNS) and virtual machines....

Microsoft Edge automatically applies “more conservative” security settings in enhanced security mode on unfamiliar sites. The Enhanced Security Mode gives users an extra protection by switching off just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation and enabling additional operating system protections for the browser. The protections include Hardware-enforced Stack Protection and Arbitrary Code Guard (ACG), which, when combined, make it more difficult for a malicious site to attack an end user, according to Microsoft....

Office LTSC will get five years of support total, as will Office 2021. Microsoft made a public preview of Office LTSC available in late April this year. Officials reiterated today that Office LTSC would not be Microsoft’s last “perpetual” (non-subscription) version of Office. Microsoft also is making its next releases of Project and Visio available today, September 16. Office LTSC officials reminded potential customers today, is not for those simply trying to avoid feature updates or paying for subscriptions....

Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of every month, is set to be “just another Tuesday”, Microsoft boasted when it unveiled the Autopatch managed service in April — at least for admins managing customers with Windows Enterprise/Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 licenses. Windows Autopatch has now entered the public preview for customers to test and will be generally available in July, Microsoft announced in a blogpost. As a managed service, Autopatch is different to Windows Update for Business....
